Interview with Mateusz Suda

Mateusz Suda, fashion illustrator, new media artist and an excellent graphic designer whose works are full of unrestrained energy. Suda graduated from the State Higher Vocational School in Głogów, also earned a Master of Arts at the Art Institute in Opole. Work that creates, on the one hand characterized by a certain degree of lightness, on the other, we can talk about the energizing, disaster color palette. This dualism, which is a great characteristic illustration of Souda, not only impresses, but it makes the work of the artist reach a far wider audience – even those requiring contemporary art impossible – and most importantly, meet with their approval.
unnamed-1-1024x723Patryk Chilewicz: Welcome to the country of the wheel skirts, airy dresses and minimalist black. Do not you get tired of the fashion?

Mateusz Suda: It frightens me. Everything has its limits in this world, but we live in a fairly specific country where fashion is limited to only those concepts. However, it does not surprise me. Our society has become accustomed to the simplicity that comes with the financial situation. People are afraid to be bold, afraid to show your style, afraid to go out on the street and not get in “papa” for the fact that they look different. Hatred and backwardness caused the Polish fashion is all about simplicity and nothingness. It hurts me, I dream about courage, about the people to enjoy it and have somewhere opinions of others, but how to live ?!

Patryk Chilewicz: You are an element, every moment you have a new idea. What are you currently working?

Mateusz Suda: I just finished a project for Sopot Art & Fashion Week. I am the first artist who designed the illustrations for them to poster. I am glad that I could be a precursor of this
undertaking, and thus to show that the picture is important.
With private projects focused on paintings and prints. I never thought that they would have enjoyed such recognition. Funny situation, because at the time of study oppressed me at the painting, stating that what I do is a “mercenary” high school. After that I had such a shock, and I believed my professor that is not suitable for this. It took a few years I realized that this is my life, my stories and my canvas. I gained courage and today I have orders from private collectors, sells paintings at auction. It is a form of art therapy, by recognizing underpins their self-esteem. I am very critical of myself and what I do. People write and thank me for the paintings, and thus know that there are
people who understand me, my own world and thoughts, and appreciate the best that I’m not afraid to talk about it out loud.

Patryk Chilewicz: Is the fashion young artist can maintain?

Mateusz Suda: Very rare. Many tales are sold to the poor people that all live out of fashion. Flashes flashes and glitter on the red carpet is a picture of what people expect, but nobody knows that it is often added just to survive. I myself do not live only with art, often does a lot of commercial projects would have on the bread. Many of my friends are talented people, but their financial situation forces to ensure that work in corporations. They forgot about their passion and devote time to earn
money to make a living. Recently I watched an interview with a famous designer and boasted that he lives out of fashion. At the time when the presenter asked him what has advice for young people, said: “You have a lot of work.” He did not mention, however, of the contacts that he had better start finance and so on. Work is important, develops, but not snow of young people. This is for me a poor approach. Someone who has a talent not succeed without the knowledge, contacts, sponsors. My
advice, do not be afraid to work for free, but do not give a fool of myself. Fight for yourself and push to get to know a lot of people. Thus it can count on a slightly better start.

Patryk Chilewicz: In our country is still experiencing a rash of T-shirts with inscriptions and other prints. It’s a fad? And what’s next?

Mateusz Suda: T-shirts with the message, t-shirts with the curse, t-shirts manifest. From time to time I designing t-shirts under the brand SUDA. However, this is an art project, I call it: ephemeral fashion. Often designed things they have no physical form, but some people have the opportunity to gain real copies.
My attitude to t-shirts with print? It amuses me, but looking at the fashion it is no longer fun. Glut printing and brain-dead graphics or passwords begins to poison our minds. As it goes on like this we forget about the design, materials, and we will all be the same. I count on that in the future will be a breakthrough.

Patryk Chilewicz: Fashion also ruled on television – Poles love the show with designers and models. What is your opinion about such competitions?

Mateusz Suda: I prefer show with designers, there’s at least the characters have something to say … Sometimes. Do not demonize them, but he feels the inner sadness. The programs help to give a chance to talented. They also give medium “experts” from fashion to them criticized. I would not be
this wave ceased to exist as a program of dance. Then the whole country was an expert on dance, now it’s time for fashion. Ask themselves: the program helps, but to what extent? Do these designers after year will continue to be known? Winning program, they become the darlings of the public, but for what? For who they are, or for what form? I am not able alone to answer these questions, we’ll see what the time. Personally, I support them, but that did not come out with another line of basic as 70% of designers. Sadness is clear from the fact that such programs would not have to exist. Why do not you help young people already during the studies? The creation of a specific organization to support talented. That would be interesting! The young man takes risks. Going to college, trained with the knowledge that it will be able to have an internship with a designer. Bearing in mind internship, I mean pay, not intellectual slavery. Get a grant, media support … .. But we like to look at the cry, scribble, splendor and brilliance of gold, which does not give any coverage in the future  heroes such reality show.

Patryk Chilewicz: Fashion shows are a great show of luxury and celebrity. Is there a chance that eventually fashion will play first violin in them?

Mateusz Suda: This question reminds me of one such run associations: wall, flash, blogger, blogger, after, after, free drinks … and the end. Fashion is a business. Designed collection need to sell. Invite the right people: magazines
editors, journalists, stylists, sponsors, investors and regular customers. It does not surprise me that “splendor”. At the shows we see, however, the people who create fictitious image of fashion. At this time we think about social media and well-known faces forgetting the clothes and the content of what they bring. The walls are filled with some individuals who dream about to sit in the front row and think, “Who cares about the new collection? Important that will show me how I’m sitting next to one of the famous bloggers. But she has so many followers on Instagram … “. Avoid such people, and
can then fashion will be better. We will begin to respect it and understand it.
